How to install Windows XP from scratch - Windows

This how to guide, tutorial will give you detailed, step by step instruction on how to install windows xp on your computer.

  1. First thing first. Insert Windows XP cd into the cd-rom drive
  2. The following screen will appear asking you to prompt from cd. Press any key to boot from cd

  3. Windows XP setup begins, for a fresh installation press enter

  4. Press F8 to accept the licence agreement

  5. Next step is to select the partition on which the operating system is to be installed, in case you have more that one partition on the same hard disk drive. Please also note that when you delete the partion there is no undo, you loose everything so in case you have something to loose make a backup first. "Better save that sorry"

  6. Format the partition.We recommend to format the partition using the ntfs file system (not quick). Quick may save you some time but may also cause you problems. At this time you can have a break of approximately half an hour (depending on your computer speed), it will format partition, copy setup files.

  7. When previouse step finishes will restart and get to you the following screen. Here you have to specify regional and language options. Click on customize and change it to your favorite one or you can always continue and change it later

  8. You will be asked about your Name and organization
  9. Enter your product key located on your computer or your Windows XP cd case
  10. Enter the name of your computer (e.g Desktop-PC) and password for the administrator, do not leave it blank is a securit vulnerability.
  11. Next you have to setup your date GMT time
  12. Networking settings setup. Use the deafult, typical setting -you can change them later when login to xp if there is need to- as shown bellow

If your computer is part of a local area network using a domain then enter the domain name in order to join the domain (remember you need a user name and password of a user that has privillage to add a new computer to the domain, usually administrators do). If not you can use the default WORKGROUP as illustrated

  14. Is time for another break before your newly installed Windows XP load. So have a break of approximately 20 minutes (again depending of your computer speed).
  15. When the display settings dialog appears press ok.

  16. When the Monitor Settings dialog box appears, click OK.

  17. Bit more patient and we are done.On the welcome to microsoft windows screen click next

  18. On the Help protect your PC page, click Help protect my PC by turning on Automatic Updates now. Then, click Next.

  19. It will ask if you connect to the internet directly or through local area network, choose appropriate settings for you

  20. If you connect through local area network or home network it will ask for details such as adsl or LAN, otherwise will ask for dial up or isdn details.
  21. Click next and ...
