I recently replaced my laptops DVD-ROM drive and it would not read the disc i inserted. I had to troubleshoot in order to fix the problem and fortunately i found a solution.
First of all i tried to enter in safe mode using the F12 or F8 function before the windows logo appears while booting the computer. In the safe mode the DVD-ROM was working just fine. It would read cd or dvd disk. that was the first step. After some more research and googeling i found on the microsoft's web site the solution... see steps bellow
- Click start
- Run and type devmgmt.msc as shown bellow
- The device manager window will open. Now expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
- Double click on the Secondary IDE Channel or the one that is appropriate for your case (e.g you may have more IDE channels).
- Chooe tab Advanced Settings and change the Transfer Mode field, in my case the correct one was PIO Only value.
