I recently replaced my laptops DVD-ROM drive and it would not read the disc i inserted. I had to troubleshoot in order to fix the problem and fortunately i found a solution.

First of all i tried to enter in safe mode using the F12 or F8 function before the windows logo appears while booting the computer. In the safe mode the DVD-ROM was working just fine. It would read cd or dvd disk. that was the first step. After some more research and googeling i found on the microsoft's web site the solution... see steps bellow

  1.  Click start
  2. Run and type devmgmt.msc as shown bellow
  3. The device manager window will open. Now expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
  4. Double click on the Secondary IDE Channel or the one that is appropriate for your case (e.g you may have more IDE channels).
  5. Chooe tab Advanced Settings and change the Transfer Mode field, in my case the correct one was PIO Only value.

Enjoy your DVD-ROM CD-ROM drive
Cool
